Harley Davidson Street Bob (FXBBS) - 5-Gallon Tank Swap

A 3.5-gallon tank looks cool, but it will only get you so far, literally.

I'd been searching for a 5-gallon Softail tank for a while, but all I could find were dented tanks or ones with ridiculous asking prices. Eventually, a Low Rider S tank showed up on eBay for a decent price, so I decided to pull the trigger.

The tank swap itself was pretty easy. The FXLRS tank is a direct bolt-on replacement for the Street Bob, but I did need a different fuel pump assembly.

You could reuse the stock FXBBS fuel pump assembly, but you wouldn't be able to use all five gallons of fuel, which kind of defeats the purpose of doing the swap in the first place.

The Low Rider S (FXLRS) fuel pump has an additional pickup that pulls fuel from the other side of the larger tank. It also uses a different fuel-level sender, which is needed for the bike to display the correct fuel level and range.

The finished swap looks almost factory, which is exactly what I wanted. The larger tank fits the Softail frame really well and gives the Street Bob considerably more range without looking oversized.
